Stealing a one of a kind bike is pretty retarded. He won't be able to sell it without being busted, unless he sells it to some douche at the skatepark for like $20. It's not like he's going to ride it. People who ride bikes know what a bike is worth to somebody.

WHEN ARE COMPANIES GOING TO PRODUCE A MICRO GPS TRANSMITTER AT LOW COST????

I live in Belgium, and there are a lot of riders here, but unfortunately with that also many thefts.

Not 2 weeks ago, some dude on a 2007 or '08 Specialized Epic built with cheap ass parts (not Sram X-5 cheap, more like shimano SIS cheap and a RST fork) followed me and my step brother on the way back home... Just to see where we live I guess? And come over when we're not home? Damn douche... We jumped a few stairs, took some tight trail in the woods and ended up at the back of the house. This was cool to do, but I don't want to HAVE to do it every time I ride into this guy. Next time I see him, I'm gonna have a little chatter time with him.

PS: I am not sorry for using caps! This pisses me off! I spent more than 7 months of wages on my ride. If some a*shole takes it, that's half a year of my life gone in addition to what I love most!!!
  • + 5
flag WAKIdesigns (Oct 4, 2011 at 7:08)
Yea have a chat with him. Whatever whoever says in most cases you can tell, you can fkn tell what kind of life a person lives. I was unfortunate to meet a bike thief because my friends brother is such a stupid fk and hangs around with such people (and buys stolen stuff). A guy came around offering us a stolen bike with not even a bit of attempt of trying to talk quiet. Screw that political correction, a world without prejudice - you can tell by the looks, you can fkn tell... and if you are not sure, just talk to the guy, ask him normal questions where does he live, what does he do, and then you will be able to tell. Liars smell from a mile and good liars don't bother stealing bikes. And you can ask around your friends and stuff, you don't need to go tell everyone you think the guy's a thief, that's a shty thing to do.

And yes GPS would be sweet. One you can just put into your saddle.
  • + 1
flag RobbyBriers  (Oct 4, 2011 at 7:31)
exactly! Glad to see that I'm not the only one thinking about that. It drives me nuts sometimes.

I was more thinking about a foldable thing (like some phones already are) that you put around your bottom bracket. In the saddle is not really reliable since that is one of the first removed things if they take the bike apart.
  • - 1
flag WAKIdesigns (Oct 4, 2011 at 8:04)
The saddle is the only place where GPS tracker can recieve/transmit signal. Maybe inside CF frame, but as far as metal frames go sorry. Many GPS trackers have the option to put the simcard in so you get the info if your bike moves. You can set intervals and stuff. If you are at work, you know no one should be moving your bike. Once you got the first contact from a building it won't be hard to begin the hunt.

A simple bike lock works to... and having the common sense to lock it up, before you leave it sitting around.
  • + 1
flag taletotell (Oct 4, 2011 at 8:59)
A chip with an app that charts your ride speed, elevation, what trails you took, and saves it online in a catalog you can access from your iphone, droid, or personal computer/mac. Only problem is the thief finds it and tosses it in like two seconds. Lojack might be better since you could hide it under your seat post and I think it would still work. They make lojack for cargo and laptops. Seems like it could be made to work for bikes.
  • + 1
flag WAKIdesigns (Oct 4, 2011 at 9:19)
gouty, most bikes like that are stolen from stores, vans or private attics, basements and garages when you are out of home... if someone gets there, he will take care of a bike lock pretty easily. Only pimps and people with too much money ride bikes like that in the city, and I don't know any normal person who takes a lock on a ride with him. The only time I take mine to the city is when I go to the LBS with it for a service...

taletotell everythig you say exists, it's just that it is big. Police was using it on bait bikes

Well bike are meant to be ridden, so ride them. when you have to stop for food or something, keep a real close eye on your bike. and the people surrounding it. i do this, and still have my bikes. another tip, dont go to a 7 eleven close to a skatepark by yourself, common sense solves everything. If a thief goes thru all the trouble to get your bike when its locked up or your watching it. then he probly deserves it...
  • + 2
flag RobbyBriers  (Oct 5, 2011 at 7:45)
I bought this bike to ride it. Not to put it against a wall or fence while I'm getting a drink. Why I want a gps tracker is not for that kind of theft, but for when it gets stolen out of a van on vacation, or out of my house. All it would have to do is transmit a unique code to a central system. Something like Google Maps. Actually, Google would make billions selling that kind of thing and writing the software for it. What stops them from doing so is that that device could be used to actually track people you want to follow. Like a cheating wife. And then murder her. And Google is held responsible for it (partially). You know how stupid people are... That's the reason stuff like this is written in the user manual of my ear plugs: "do not try to eat". ///// SERIOUSLY???

It is weird when bikes like this disappear off the face of the earth after being stolen. Leaves you thinking... have they sold it or haven't they? Broken it up or sold it whole? Ordinary scumbags wouldn't know the difference between this extremely rare frame and a shitty wall mart one. So they wouldn't pay alot for it. And that leaves me thinking that a person who pays out for this because of its rarity would obviously be a member of our biking community and thats just terrible.

Are you really that stupid? Bike stealing scum bags don't give a rat's ass about the value of a bike they steal, hell they don't even know anything about bikes. They just sell it to another scumbag for a few bucks to buy some weed and stuff, that's it! It happens ALL - THE - TIME, so get over it! Seriously, most of the time you hear that a bike "disappeared" (=> got stolen) but do you ever ask how that could happen? I mean, i (still..) have to work for my money and i love my bikes so i never leave them unattended and they sleep in my house (near the fireplace of course Wink ). It's really just common sense. So if a bike gets stolen always ask what the owner did to prevent the theft. Just don't leave it unattended! And locks? Are you kidding me? You know about all the different QR systems and a 5mm allen key is all you need to break down almost the entire bike, so how many locks do you think you'll need to secure your bike? So please, DON'T LEAVE YOUR BIKES UNATTENDED! (Otherwise it's your own fault that your bike gets stolen, then please go cry somewhere else).

I bring mine to class. A guy tried to bust me walking down the hall with it I asked if the school would cover the replacement of a $3000 bike in the event a thief cut the lock and he started stuttering and then said to keep it out of the way. Most places don't mind if you bring the bike just inside the door. The drugstore lets me park inside and I just keep an eye on it. So does the clerk.

And build in excess of £1000 are common these days... Shame but this is reality- be safe and lock it- that is the only way I can think of so far...

The sad part is, that hte thieves in Victoria are typically fairly well organized. By the time you notice that your bike is gone, it's already in Vancouver, been stripped of all it's parts and the frame is either destroyed or repainted.

I lost a few bikes in Victoria, and they were all locked... with Kryptonite locks!! Locks only keep honest people honest... if a theif really wants your bike, it's as good as gone. That's why all of my bikes are kept in my house when I'm not out riding them.

Good thing theres only a few of these frames ever made. Only the rocky mountain team get given these frames, so it'd be relatively easier to find.

honestly you'd have to be retarded to steal this because its one of a few ever made so it will stick out like a sore thumb even if its stripped of parts and paint, hope you get your bike back jarrett!

flag sniperbob02 (Oct 4, 2011 at 18:19)
you'd have to be retarded to steal something from someone point. if you are too much of a f*got to work your ass and buy yourself the tings you want at least don't touch what others put all their time and effort to afford it. some says that its a big company so its nothing... it didn't came from the sky, someone had to start all that and others will say that the company's employe have good pays... they got great skills too... not everybody can fill those position. they worked hard to get there... I'm so pissed each time i see something like that happening ...
